Used, Russian made, Mosin-Nagant M38 in good condition. The Mosin-Nagant M38 is a bolt-action carbine developed by the Soviet Union in 1938 as a more compact variant of the standard M91/30 rifle. It was intended for non-combat troops and second-echelon soldiers, such as artillerymen and signalers, who needed a lighter, handier weapon for self-defense. Features and history Action and cartridge: Like other Mosin-Nagant rifles, the M38 is a 5-round bolt-action rifle that fires the 7.62x54mmR cartridge. Production: The M38 was primarily produced at the Izhevsk and Tula arsenals between 1939 and 1945. Compact size: The M38 has a barrel length of 20.2 inches (513.08 mm), making it about 8 inches shorter and 1.25 pounds lighter than the standard M91/30 rifle. No bayonet: A key distinguishing feature is that the M38 was not designed to accept a bayonet. The front sight was positioned to prevent the fitting of a standard M91/30 bayonet. Replacement: The M38 was replaced in 1944 by the Mosin-Nagant M44 carbine, which had a permanently attached folding bayonet. Original vs. M44 stock: A factor affecting collectible value is whether the M38 has its original stock or a stock that was later replaced with an M44-pattern stock. Original M38 stocks lack the relief cut on the right side for a folding bayonet.
